NZS 3109 is the New Zealand standard covering how concrete is actually built: reinforcement installation, formwork, embedded items, and the placing, finishing and curing of the concrete itself.

For commercial projects, it works alongside NZS 3101, the design standard for concrete structures, and NZS 3104, which governs the concrete mix itself.

NZS 3109: construction

Sets out recognised practice for concrete construction: reinforcement installation, formwork, embedded items, and placing, finishing and curing.

NZS 3101: design

The design standard for concrete structures, governing how a structure should be engineered. NZS 3109 provides the means of compliance for structures designed under it.

NZS 3104: the mix

Governs concrete production and mix compliance, classifying concrete as Normal, Special or Prescribed Mix depending on its intended use and required strength.

Compressive strength scope

The construction requirements in NZS 3109 apply to concrete with a specified compressive strength (f'c) of 70 MPa or less, covering the large majority of commercial slabs.

What it means in practice

Reinforcement placed to the correct cover and spacing, formwork strong enough and removed at the right time, and curing carried out long enough to reach specified strength.

Commercial slabs need higher strength

Commercial slabs are typically specified to a higher compressive strength than residential work and are engineered for the actual loads they'll carry, whether that's forklift traffic, heavy vehicles or racking loads.

Commercial concrete across the wider region

We build commercial concrete to NZS 3109 across Auckland, and our commercial and earthworks capability extends into Waikato and Bay of Plenty as well.

FAQ

What does NZS 3109 cover?

NZS 3109 covers the construction side of concrete work: reinforcement installation, formwork, embedded items, and the placing, finishing and curing of the concrete.

What's the difference between NZS 3109 and NZS 3101?

NZS 3101 is the design standard for concrete structures. NZS 3109 is the construction standard, covering how that design is actually built and providing the means of compliance for structures designed under NZS 3101.

What compressive strength does NZS 3109 apply to?

The construction requirements in NZS 3109 apply to concrete with a specified compressive strength (f'c) of 70 MPa or less, which covers almost all commercial floor slabs and structural concrete elements.

Does commercial concrete need a higher strength than residential?

Usually, yes. Commercial slabs are specified and engineered for the actual loads they'll carry, such as forklifts, heavy vehicles or racking, which typically means a higher specified compressive strength.

Do you do commercial concrete outside Auckland?

Yes. Our commercial concrete and earthworks capability extends into Waikato and Bay of Plenty in addition to our core Auckland service area.
